Learn Singing and sing like the stars. Singing exercises, tips and ways to improve your technique. Suggestions, support and answers to your singing questions.
Editors Introduction: Getting a start on some basic beginners exercises is something you need to do right away. Even these simple tips will start you on your way. This article by Joe McDaniel suggests four simple techniques we can all begin to use immediately. Read on…
Okay, this is a short article. This is mostly for people who are starting and want to learn to sing in tune, but ANY singer can find great use from these exercises and just learn to sing well.
First – singing is all about air. It’s about breathing and VOLUME. If you want to hit a note perfectly, especially the higher ones (but any note basically), you need to hear yourself well, and you need to have VOLUME. Singing softly for yourself is probably the #1 cause for not hitting notes correctly. If you want to get in tune, then sing louder.
If you are able to breathe correctly, then you have enough air to really CARRY the note forward – you can hold it for a long time if you so wish.
So how do you breathe? Through your abdomen. Try this exercise: stand up straight, feet shoulder width, back straight, and put one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach. Breathe in deeply. Which hand rose? If it’s the one on your chest, then you belong into the majority of people.
However, to really learn to sing well and develop a good singing voice, you need to breathe into your stomach so your lower hand rises. Try this – take a deep breath in through your nose, then start releasing the air VERY SLOWLY through your open mouth. Do it as slowly as you can. This will help you practice using your abdomen to breathe.
If you do only this one thing, you should start seeing improvements very soon. Do this way of breathing every time you start your singing practice. If you breathe deep, you have volume and energy in your voice, and hitting the right notes will be so much easier.
Okay, now here’s some things you can do learn to sing well:
1. When singing something, cup your ear with your fingers and put your palm in front of your mouth. This way you can really hear yourself clearly (develop a thick skin as you’ll be listening to yourself a lot) and can adjust.
2. Sing along with a piano. Press random keys on the piano, one at a time, and try to match your voice to it. Play a scale from C to C.
3. Find an electronic guitar tuner and sing a scale. You will automatically see if you’re too high or low.
4. Sing along with recordings. And record yourself singing! This is so important – you need to hear yourself from outside your own body, so to speak. It will be much clearer what you are doing wrong. Then do it again and you will hit the notes way better. Do it enough and you can learn to sing the song correctly.
If you commit to doing these exercises regularly, I promise you will start to see great results soon.
However, if you want to take a huge bite off of the time that it would normally take to learn to sing well, then [http://i-wish-i-could-sing.blogspot.com]click here and read how I did this within six months and how I now receive compliments on my singing. I had guitar/singing lessons and my voice would crack.
She said I should keep the air flowing and we did lip trills
and also the fee’s or the feh’s she said after the end.
I am usually good at these (third lesson as a beginner)
but today I was soo bad! What can I drink or do before
the warm ups (lol,.a warm up before the warm up!!)
and can you tell me a good girl’s version of Blackbird?
I need to learn that because we are singing that!
I mean she is a GREAT teacher and is awesome
but I just want to be the best for her because
she is a dedicated teacher and I want to surprise
her by knowing all the notes and my voice not
cracking (I am 12 going on to 13) in the fee’s
because my fee’s are so flat when I sing
but it might be because its early (10:00 lessons)
and she said she has been singing like that
since middle school and she is 23!
She even looks like she is 19 heehe.
Any tips plz?

Well first off Blackbird is a great song for singing and when I learned to play it on guitar I could sing it, but I sang it very badly. If you want a good female version of it look up Hayley Legg on youtube. But anyways, learn to sing the song without playing it or focusing on anything else, just sing it plain and clear. As for the voice cracks I’m sorry, but those are going to be there for a while, if you want to try and minimize them I suggest drinking room temperature water before you sing, or you have the option of exercising the vioce cracks away, which is what voice lessons will tend to do, but it’s fairly difficult at that age. The good thing about Blackbird is it’s very accepting of different voice pitches, most mid range pitches will do and the pitch of McCartney’s voice doesn’t change very much throughout the song. Just be patient and listen to your teacher, because when you get older and your voice evens out you will already have it exercised and it’ll pay off.
I’m a 14 year old male and I absolutely love the band Black Veil Brides and music in general. I am not very good at singing as it is, and I am lost on what to do. I can’t afford a private vocal coach so I know that’s out of the question. I need to know what I can do to improve my singing voice.
What you can do is first control your voice, and don’t let it control you. Its ok if you cant afford lessions. its fine. If you really want to get better at singing……you have to love it, connected with the song like your telling a story. and if you have the passion for singing, you will get better. oh and your only 14 huh? cool you can join the school choir to improve on your voice and learn how to read music and listen to how everything is connected. like the band Back Veil Brides. they don’t just sing out of the blue, i make their music by coming from the heart and they connect the music to their lifes. Every song is written for a reason and you will be more into the song once you know it. and it will be more exciting. and dont worry sing everyday if you have to and dont over do it.
i can be your coach if you want, cuz real musician is always willing to help another musician by the passion of making music.but yeah my email is kcha11@hotmail.com if you ever need me.oh and girls love guys that can sing xD(sorry i never had a girl yet so xD)
GOOD LUCK!!!
I love singing, i sing all the time, and people have always told me i should record something or sing in a group or something. So, i had the opportunity to sing 3 songs with a group tomorrow night. We had one practice today beforehand but i just felt like my voice sounded AWFUL once it was miked up. Am i being paranoid just because i’m not used to hearing my voice amplified?
Does anyone have any tips to make my performance sound better with the microphone? I’m so damn nervous! please help!
I would say to listen. What sounded awful? Before you perform, practicing singing into the mic backstage; do a small warm up and listen. What sounds different? What can you do to adjust your voice so it doesn’t sound odd?
It might be nerves because you’re not accustomed to the microphone, and by hearing your voice amplified, it’s making you more nervous so it sounds awful to you. It’s a performance, and you don’t want to mess up. Just relax – and breathe. It will be a new experience. Focus on song and what comes next; not how you sound. Of course, listen, but just keep going and you’ll do fine.
I learned that if you do not warm up before you sing you could possibly damaged your vocal chords. What are some exercises/ warm-ups that i can do before i sing?
Mommy made me mash my M and M’s – keep going up a note each time, then back down when you cant go any higher
Simple scales. La la la la la
Make up your own rhythm to the ABC’s
Bumblebee scales. simple scales as listed above but instead of saying la la la… you say bumblebee
This gets you to annunciate more… All i want is a proper cup of coffee, made in a proper copper coffee pot. I may be off my dot, but I want a cup of coffee from a copper coffee pot. Tin coffee pots and iron coffee pots… theyre no good to me…. if i cant have a proper cup of coffee from a proper copper coffee pot, ill have a cup of tea!
I’m 16 years old and have never been told I have talent or anything. Nor do I think I have talent. But it would be cool to sing well. I know the basics of a good voice (pitch and tone, volume, singing from the right places) but can they be learned?
Also: if I sang for an acting audition (only because I had to) and I thought I was pretty good but I lost the part to someone I thought was worse does it mean I’m tone deaf? Can you learn to sing even if you ARE tone deaf?
You have a lot of questions going on here. I want to first address the audition. Alot of times when casting for specific roles it doesn’t matter how good you are, it may only matter what you look like and if you are moldable. you may very well have been the better singer, but not the look they were going for.
Can you learn to be a good singer, HECK YEAH! Not everyone has a voice like Kristen Chenowith when they come from the womb and even they need lessons like the rest of us.
If you are willing to put forth the effort and energy then I think you can become a great singer.
Being truly tone deaf is rare. If you think you are tone deaf you may just need to work on listening to the tone and matching it. It may take longer, but it would be worth it in the end.
I would say find a voice teacher. If you want to start small try hiring a grad student from a local college first. Or even joining a choir can be very beneficial.
Disire and determination is a great foundation.
Good luck!
